Whith more than 80 years of history, Gan Rugs has become a prestigious brand of designer rugs
Gan Rugs has positioned itself as a benchmark in the production of design rugs. Its
philosophy is based on the value of handmade products and its essence is the
craftsmanship of each of its pieces.
The brand works with renowned designers with a clear objective: to give them the perfect
tool to develop their creativity. With their wide range of carpet collections, they are able to
bring a fresh and sophisticated touch to any space in your home.
Gan works with different techniques, shapes, fabrics and volumes in an artisanal way,
making each of his creations unique. Part of their team is dedicated to the optimization of
these techniques so that they are in a continuous process of updating.
The brand creates exclusive luxury pieces, allowing designers to express their creativity and
become true expert craftsmen. Gan’s secret lies in its reinterpretation of traditional
techniques to create contemporary designs.
Our women artisans embroider rugs just as they would for their own homes. All that changes
are the materials and the scale, which are adapted to our designs.
This technique has been used by nomads for centuries and is appreciated for its insulating
power. To obtain the felt, the wool is carded, steamed and pressed. You can play with
designs and colours, add embroidery, appliqués or use punching techniques. This means
the collections are very different from each other even though they share a common
Hand-operated looms. In some cases the yarn is held to the warp rolled around a rod that
determines the height of the pile of the rug. In others it is simply crossed over. This
technique can be used to create numerous finishes, from flat pieces with thick yarn which is
knotted, cut, braided or looped.
This technique needs no introduction and its possibly one of the most known crafts in the
world. It consists of hand knitting with needles and wool or cotton thread. Only expert hands
Hand knotted technique allows very detailed designs to be created. Handmade on a vertical
loom on which the wool is fastened firmly to the warp through a knot. The shape and
thickness of the knot differentiate the various kinds of hand-knotted rugs; more knots result
in greater definition and a longer-lasting, more valuable rug.
Hand Tufted requires a manual process on stretched cotton fabric, using a ‘tufting gun’,
which shoots out and cuts the wool to follow the pattern design. The wool is bonded to the
base with a layer of rubber. This technique can be used to create different heights of pile,
loop finishes and all designs and colours.
To make kilims, the weft is interwoven with the threads on the loom, resulting in a flat, pile-
free and very light carpet.
The value of craftsmanship
All these pieces are crafted by experienced artisans in India. The handcrafted collections
preserve tradition while enriching contemporary design.
The brand thus supports the economic development of the area where the rugs are
manufactured. Some years ago, the company, together with the renowned designer Patricia
Urquiola and her Bandas collection, promoted the GAN Women Unit initiative to collaborate
with unemployed women from local artisan workshops.
Over time, other Gan collections have joined this initiative. In this way, the brand benefits
from the traditional know-how of local craftswomen and in return they receive a fair
